Rena Czaplinska-Archer RAIA
Director

Rena Architects is a small architectural practice providing a friendly personal service in residential and small commercial architecture. We undertake both renovations and new houses. We specialise in sustainable, energy efficient design and construction, and projects with heritage significance. Leaner greener and smarter architecture is the call of the times with the climate high on the agenda.

We are passionate about energy efficient and sustainable design and always include passive solar design and healthy building advice in all our projects. All our designs focus on creating thermal comfort. We pay attention to orientation, insulation and seasonal climate changes and we encourage the use of outdoor rooms and courtyard designs which work very well in the Australian climate. We shape buildings that require less power consumption, that are warm, open, natural, functional, easy and economical.

"We are passionate about energy efficient and sustainable design and always include passive solar design and healthy building advice in all our projects."

Our designs use a restrained palette of natural materials and neutral colours. Healthy buildings are designed in harmony with their environment and care for the wellbeing of their occupants. We intimately understand the impact a well designed environment has on the wellbeing of people who live there. Wellness is another way of saying taking care of the health of human beings – it means fresh air, it means daylight, thermal comfort, non toxic materials, it means creating spaces that are humane, joyful and pleasant to occupy.

"We intimately understand the impact a well designed environment has on wellbeing of people who live there."

Rena has a PhD in history and theory of modern architecture and has an ongoing interest in heritage architecture and in teaching. She brings to the practice her early experience of working in Germany, UK and Poland, which adds a bit of multicultural ear and heart to the way we design.

Referring to the 2000 Heritage Award the judges said that Rena Architects work “illustrates that it is possible to provide contemporary houses that meet modern requirements in a manner that acknowledges and takes delight in their environment. The quality of design and the new relationships created are very successful. The restricted budget demonstrates what is possible with creativity and insight. The result is quiet, respectful and joyful”
